There is no denying the fact that traveling has recently become a necessity more than it being a mere luxury. Nowadays, people of all ages find it essential to escape once in a while to relax and take their mind off the pressure of work, family and the society. But despite travel becoming mainstream, it still doesn’t come cheap. Unless you got millions, no one is capable of simply booking a flight or a hotel that could set you back several thousands in just a snap of a finger. It takes careful planning and management of your finances to achieve even your most ludicrous travel goals. So allow me to share 5 saving hacks that has worked for me and has taken me places without eventually becoming broke.

1. Familiarize Your Calendar – Becoming familiar with your calendar will actually benefit you more than you can imagine. Knowing when the usual holidays in our country enables you to plan your travel and your finances well. I’m quite sure you don’t wanna be out from work during days when you can earn double or more. Plus overtimes? With this, you can put more on your travel funds. Another important thing is that this is when flights and hotels are usually on sale. All you need is a stable internet connection to be ahead of everyone else. Lastly, don’t you know that prices are on the rise during holidays? Yup. I know it’s tempting to be a part of the holiday rush but you’re actually not doing yourself a favor. Think about it this way. Would you be willing to pay twice the price for a crowded beach when you can have the place to yourself for way less during non-peak times.

2. Learn To Prioritize – Knowing which are the important things to spend your money on gets you one step closer to realizing your dream vacation. Don’t spend on stuff like a pair of shoes or a beautiful dress unless it’s absolutely necessary. Skip your morning expensive coffee or your daily dose of milk tea. We know very well it doesn’t have much of a difference to the cheap instant coffee or tea mix other than the fact that it has too much milk and sugar. Also, avoid riding cabs or GRAB going home and work. Take public transportation instead. You might not notice as the money you spend on these things maybe little but it could accumulate to a significant amount enough to book you a 2-way ticket to Bali or The Maldives.

3. Do Your Research – Some people tend to forget the importance of research. Unlike before when resources were hard to come by, now there’s plenty of travel blogs and vlogs in the internet that contain essential information about some of the most coveted local and international destinations. Doing your research about the place you are about to visit will help set your expectations. This will also enable you to allot the right budget for your chosen activities whether you would like to go island hopping or mountain climbing or simply spend your time trying local cuisines.

4. Itemize Your Savings – Don’t just save money to travel. Save up for other things as well, like investments and medical insurance. Having an investment allows you to grow your income. That way you don’t have to spend your travel funds in cases of emergency because you have other sources to get it from. Getting a medical insurance is another way to avoid using your travel funds for hospital and medical bills. This will ensure your travel goals will not be compromised despite unforeseen and dire situations.

5. Get A Credit Card – There are numerous benefits to having a credit card, especially if you love to travel. Ever experienced an airline ticket sale exclusively for credit cardholders? Also, credit cards are a lifesaver during times when you don’t have extra cash. Like what if an airline suddenly have a snap sale and payday is still too far out. More importantly, credit cards let you earn points on your purchases which could be converted into miles. And if it still doesn’t convince you to get a credit card, you might be surprised to know that some credit cards have installment and deferral options which would allow you to pay your charges little by little helping you plan your finances more efficiently in the process.
