Bantayan Island left a lasting impression on me during my first-brief-visit in 2016. Ever since, I’ve been meaning to return to this stunning yet understated gem. It’s quietly one of the best islands in the Philippines: impeccably beautiful, pristine, uncrowded, and refreshingly affordable. Even after gaining attention from Camp Sawi, it has managed to stay budget-friendly and unspoiled. If you’re planning a trip to Cebu and want an island that truly delivers on both time and value, here’s a Bantayan Island 3-day itinerary to guide your escape.

OUR BANTAYAN ISLAND 3-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1: Exploring the Gems of Sta. Fe

We arrived on Bantayan Island at 8 AM, exhausted from the overnight journey, so we took a couple of hours to rest and recharge. By around 10 AM, we were finally ready to head out and start exploring. One thing I really loved about this trip was the freedom to move at our own pace, thanks to the motorcycle we rented as soon as we arrived. Having our own ride made it easy to discover the island on our own terms.

Bantayan Island 3-Day Itinerary

We first made our way to Ogtong Cave Resort, the closest spot to where we were staying. However, after learning about the ₱300 entrance fee per person, we decided to skip it and head to The Ruins instead. We had hoped to take a dip and spend some time at this iconic site, but the Sunday crowd was a bit overwhelming, so we decided to head back to our hotel for lunch. After eating, the midday sun felt a little too intense for exploring, so we chose to take it easy and rest at the hotel instead.

Bantayan Island 3-Day Itinerary

We headed out again at 2 PM, making our way to one of my favorite spots on the island, Obo-Ob Mangrove Forest. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, this place is hard to beat. My favorite part? The sunset. It’s simply magical. On the way, we stopped by the Coconut Forest to snap a few photos. It looked exactly as I remembered it from nine years ago. The same goes for Obo-Ob Mangrove Forest—it felt as though time had stood still, preserving its calm, untouched charm.

Bantayan Island 3-Day Itinerary

We attempted a return to Sandira Beach for a laid-back afternoon, but the rain had other plans. Pivoting quickly, we opted for an early dinner at Thai Phoon, where we indulged in a sumptuous spread of Pad Thai, spicy beef salad, and, of course, mango sticky rice. Since the night was still young, we kept the energy going with cold beers, local barbecue, and a few rounds of karaoke. It was the kind of soul-satisfying first day that leaves you eager for what the next morning holds.

Day 2: The Ruins, Island, and Beach Hopping

A morning shower is a delight when your only plan is to stay in bed. However, when you have a long list of places to explore, it can be a bit of a bummer. That was the story of our second day: the rain stalled our plans, keeping us tucked away until 10:00 AM. Despite the late start, we still managed to tick off the highlights on our list.

We began with a brief visit to The Ruins. This was the most memorable spot for me during my first trip to the island, and it hasn’t lost its charm. The ocean here transitions through every beautiful shade of blue, and the rocky cliffs offer a dramatic vantage point to watch wild waves crash against the stone.

Bantayan Island 3-day itinerary

The skeletal remains of the ruins add a certain flair, too. It feels like a secret childhood hideout—the kind of place where you and your friends would spend hours without a care in the world. The graffiti on the walls serves as a poignant reminder of days gone by; moments shared with friends that you never realized would eventually become just a memory.

As the sun finally broke through the clouds, we headed out for brunch. Driving through town, nothing caught my eye quite like The Coco Cafe. With its faint turquoise accents and rustic vibe, it spoke directly to my “island girlie” soul. It was a winning choice, as the breakfast was mouthwatering, the portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. If you’re on the island, this is a must-visit.

Bantayan Island 3-day itinerary

After a hearty brunch, we headed to the port to charter a boat for a day of island hopping. Even though I’ve been here before, the mesmerizing, turquoise waters of the Virgin Islands never lose their charm. Now that the itinerary includes a new hidden gem, Baigad Lagoon, the ₱2,500 rate for two people feels like a fair trade for the experience.

The island hopping was exactly as I remembered. Aside from a few new attractions and photo ops, snorkeling at Hilantagaan Island and lounging on the pristine white sands of the Virgin Islands brought back a flood of memories. It was a perfect reminder of why I fell in love with Bantayan in the first place, while the addition of Baigad Lagoon only proved that this island truly sits in a league of its own.

Bantayan Island 3-day itinerary

We would have loved to stay longer, but an afternoon downpour cut our island hopping short. Back in Sta. Fe with time to spare, we looked for the perfect spot to ride out the rain. The inviting shores of Sta. Fe Beach Club won us over, so we hopped on our motorcycle and headed straight there. It was the perfect call; we watched as stormy clouds gathered on the horizon, painting the sky in a moody, beautiful display of grey and purple. While the worsening weather eventually chased us back to our hostel, leaving us temporarily trapped and hungry, the rain finally let up just in time. We ended the night exactly how it should end in Bantayan: with a massive seafood feast.

Day 3: Chasing History and Coastal Horizons

Our third day began with a slow, hearty breakfast at Everyday Sunday Cafe. We stuck to the comforting classics, Filipino silogs, but swapped our usual drinks for iced coffee to kickstart the long drive ahead. With the motorcycle fueled up, we left the familiar streets of Sta. Fe and headed toward the heritage-rich heart of the island: Bantayan Town.

There is a profound sense of time in this part of the island. We wandered through the old cemetery and the town plaza, but the true showstopper was the St. Peter and Paul Parish Church. As one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in the country, it left me completely awestruck. The intricacy of the facade is stunning, but it’s the painted ceilings that truly command your attention, a masterpiece of detail that makes you want to linger in the pews just to soak it all in.

Leaving the history of the town center behind, we rode north toward Madridejos. The journey itself was a highlight, especially the stretch just past the welcome arch where a long, lush tunnel of trees arches over the road. Emerging from that green canopy, we reached Kota Park. The walkway here stretches far into the sea, leading to a view deck that offers a breathtaking 360-degree vantage point of the island and an endless, uninterrupted horizon.

By the time we returned to Sta. Fe and rested briefly at the hostel, the afternoon had turned moody. Refusing to let the weather dampen our spirits, we spent the remaining hours at Sandira Beach, watching the stormy sky meet the waves. For dinner, we headed to the lively MJ Square. It was a culinary win; we tucked into some of the best kinilaw we’ve ever tasted, paired with cold beers, and capped off the night with a treat of fried ice cream.

The next morning, an early breakfast hunt led us to Amihan Beach Cabanas. While the food didn’t quite hit the mark for us, the spectacular view from the property made every peso spent feel worth it. As our time on the island was finally coming to an end, we faced a difficult choice. We weren’t ready to leave and desperately wanted to stretch our time on the island even further. However, with an actual storm looming and the very real threat of being stranded, we had to be practical. As much as Bantayan pulls at your heartstrings, we couldn’t risk missing our next adventure: the mystical island of Siquijor. We left with full hearts and a little bit of longing, already dreaming of the next time we can let time stand still here.

HOW TO GO TO BANTAYAN ISLAND

From Manila: To begin your journey, fly into Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Once you land, you have a few options to reach the North Bus Terminal:

  • By Bus: Take the airport shuttle bus directly to the terminal.
  • By Car: If you arrive late at night or prefer a more direct route, hailing a white taxi or booking a ride via the Grab app is your best bet.

At the North Bus Terminal, purchase a ticket for a bus bound for Bantayan Island. Be sure to inform the teller that your final destination is Sta. Fe.

—The Journey via Hagnaya Port

The trip includes a crossing from the mainland to the island. Here is what to expect:

  • Hagnaya Port: Upon arrival at the port, all passengers must alight the bus to purchase their ferry tickets (if you haven’t asked the bus conductor to buy it for you) and pay the terminal fee.
  • The Ferry: You will board the ferry for a scenic 2-hour ride across the Visayan Sea.
  • Arrival at Bantayan: Once the ferry docks at the island’s port, simply hop back onto your bus. It will take you the rest of the way to your stop in the charming town of Sta. Fe.

ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR A HASSSLE-FREE BANTAYAN ISLAND ADVENTURE

Bantayan Island 3-day Itinerary

1. Master the Transit Schedule

The journey from Cebu City to the island requires a bit of timing. Keep these numbers in your notes:

  • The Bus: The last bus leaves the North Bus Terminal for the island at 11:00 PM. If you miss this window, you’ll have to wait until the next trip at 1:00 AM. Expect to pay around ₱260 for the fare.
  • The Ferry: The first ferry typically departs Hagnaya Port at 4:00 AM. The ticket costs ₱270/way, plus a ₱25 terminal fee. The last ferry leaves Bantayan Island at 7:00 PM, depending on the weather.

2. Secure Your Stay Early

Bantayan is a favorite for both locals and travelers, meaning the most popular accommodations—especially the high-value, budget-friendly gems—fill up incredibly fast. To avoid settling for a spot that doesn’t fit your vibe, try to book your hotel at least a few weeks in advance, particularly if you’re visiting on a weekend.

3. Opt for Two Wheels

If you’re comfortable driving, renting a motorcycle is the ultimate way to reclaim your time. It’s significantly more cost-effective and gives you the freedom to explore hidden corners at your own pace.

Comparison: A standard tricycle day tour for 2–3 people usually starts at ₱1,500. Renting your own ride will cost a fraction of that and allow you to skip the fixed itineraries.

4. Beat the Crowds

Bantayan’s iconic spots are no secret. Places like The Ruins or the Obo-ob Mangrove Forest can get quite busy during peak afternoon hours.

Pro-Tip: Start your day at sunrise or aim for “off-peak” hours (like early brunch time) to enjoy the island’s natural beauty without the photobombers. There’s nothing quite like having a stretch of white sand all to yourself.

5. Dive Into the Culinary Scene

Bantayan is a paradise for foodies, and the best part is that the restaurants here offer incredible value for your money. You don’t have to break the bank to eat like royalty.

  • Thai Phoon: Perfect for when you’re craving authentic Pad Thai or a spicy beef salad.
  • The Coco Cafe: A must-visit for breakfast lovers who appreciate a rustic, “island girlie” aesthetic and generous portions.
  • MJ Square: This is the island’s culinary heart, a hub where you can find everything from fresh seafood and the best kinilaw to unique treats like fried ice cream.

6. Go Beach Resort Hopping

Every stretch of sand in Sta. Fe has its own personality. Instead of staying put, spend an afternoon visiting different resorts to soak up the variety:

  • Amihan Beach Cabanas: Known for having one of the most pristine and beautiful shorelines on the island.
  • Kota Beach: The ultimate destination for those Instagram-worthy shots, especially with its iconic sandbar and swaying palms.
  • Sta. Fe Beach Club: Another “snap-worthy” location that offers a classic Bantayan stay and great views of the horizon.

7. Wander Through Bantayan Town

While Sta. Fe is the tourist hub, driving to the Town of Bantayan is essential for a change of pace. It’s a dream for history buffs and those who love wandering through quiet, historic alleys. You’ll find charming old buildings and local eateries tucked away from the main crowds, offering a more authentic glimpse into island life.

8. Explore the North in Madridejos

If you really want to discover the island’s hidden corners, keep driving north to Madridejos. The ride itself is a treat, especially through the lush “tree tunnels”, and once you arrive, spots like Kota Park offer a rugged, peaceful beauty that feels worlds away from the busy beaches. It’s the perfect place to watch the sky turn moody over the endless horizon.

WHERE TO STAY ON BANTAYAN ISLAND

Finding the perfect home base on Bantayan Island is all about matching the vibe to your itinerary. Since Santa Fe is the island’s main gateway and home to those iconic white sands, it’s naturally where you’ll find the best variety of accommodations. Most of the island’s top-rated resorts and boutique hotels are clustered here, offering easy access to both the beach and the local dining scene.
